Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted for the prestigious Employer of the Year award at the University of Sunderland Apprenticeships Awards 2026.
This award recognises organisations that provide an exceptional experience for their apprentices, demonstrating a supportive culture, excellent training and development opportunities and a strong commitment to the success of their apprenticeship programmes.
The Trust has been nominated for its Student Nursing Associate Apprenticeship, highlighting its dedication to developing high-quality apprenticeship opportunities through the creation of an on-site Health and Care Academy in partnership with the University of Sunderland.

The academy enables Northumbria Healthcare to take a proactive approach to workforce development, designing and delivering programs that are closely aligned with NHS values, service needs, and workforce priorities. Apprentices benefit from education that is both academically rigorous and clinically relevant, alongside strong academic and pastoral support.
“Our partnership with the University has been central to the success of our Student Nursing Associate Apprenticeship programme,” said Emma Dawes, Head of Nursing Midwifery and AHP Development. “Together we have co-designed the course to integrate theory and practice, provide clear progression routes and ensure a consistent and supportive experience for every apprentice. This collaboration allows us to build a skilled, motivated workforce equipped to meet the evolving needs of our patients.”

Northumbria Healthcare’s investment in the academy also creates more accessible opportunities for individuals who may previously have faced barriers to entering healthcare careers, reflecting the Trust’s commitment to inclusion and workforce development.
The Trust looks forward to celebrating this recognition at the awards ceremony later this week.
